POHER is involved in supporting education locally and internationally. Since its inception, the program has sponsored students from Zambia, Nigeria, Cameroon, South Sudan, Egypt, Kenya, Ethiopia, and Sierra Leone. Selection criteria include academic excellence, social responsibility, community involvement, financial need, and the personal impact that the award will have on the recipient's academic aspirations. Since its inception, the program has sponsored 28 students from Zambia, Nigeria, Cameroon, South Sudan, Egypt, Kenya, Ethiopia, and Sierra Leone.

The POHER mentorship program is a comprehensive program that will help mentees develop a clinical research project and their long-term career interest. The program will introduce mentees to the basic concepts of clinical research, good clinical practice, and provide an opportunity for mentees to present their research progress to an audience of POHER mentors for expert input. In addition, the POHER mentorship program will empower mentees with the skills needed to build a professional network (including membership in professional organizations) and patient advocacy. The Scholars will acknowledge POHER in work accomplished as a POHER scholar and will acknowledge their mentors as co-authors in publications as well.
